groovemoxie
What a year. Or, to put it a different way: What a year!
2007 has been 365 days of evolution at Coptix, but not the slow, plodding evolution we read about in school textbooks. This has been fast growth, buckling up and hunkering down like never before, then holding on for dear life while steering the roaring rocket of our company onward and upward. Ad astra, boys and girls. And now it's time for that rocketship to light up the sky like the Riverbend fireworks grand finale. It's time to celebrate the past year, and the one to come. And even more so, to celebrate the family, friends, City and clients that have made it all possible.
So we're throwing a party. And you're invited to enjoy drinks, dancing and shenanigans. December 8 at Loose Cannon Studios, just off Main Street in the Southside. Doors open at 10 pm and close sometime around sunrise.
Dust off your dancing shoes, dryclean that little black dress, and polish up your groovemoxie. Because it's going to be an unforgettable night.

Coptix Exhibits Work of John Henry on New Website
Today, John Henry Sculptor, Inc. announces the launch of their new website. The site was developed by Chattanooga integrated design firm Coptix Inc., and features the work of world renowned sculptor John Henry.
John Henry is known both nationally and internationally for his public works of art, sculpture in a trademark style of large scale, geometric forms. In addition to three installations in Chattanooga, his sculptures are collected and exhibited on five continents, with upcoming shows in London, Paris, Venice, and throughout the United States. Earlier this year, one of his large scale works was sold by Christie's auction house in Vancouver, for $1 million USD.
The style, scope and purity of Henry's work called for a web presence that is simple and strong, yet user-friendly enough to be accessible to art lovers of varying levels of internet experience. John Henry Sculptor, Inc. contracted Coptix to design and build a site that promotes not only the artwork, but also the John Henry brand and visual language.
The website, JohnHenrySculptor.com, has a high quality design and is simultaneously easy to navigate. Features of the site include biographical information about the artist, exhibition and gallery listings, news and media clippings. A portfolio of works categorizes recent and archive works by scale, using simple sliders to allow site visitors to browse images, then click each to enlarge.
"Having a visually interesting website that is easy to navigate has become essential in todays art market," said John Henry. "It saves my office a great deal of time as we refer clients, galleries, museums and even students to the site. We can be on the phone with a collector and simultaneously looking at the same sculpture - so much more immediate than sending out pictures. Our website is a great tool and Coptix created a site for us that we can easily update as the need arises."

CreateHere Asks Coptix to Build Online Information Hub and Virtual Suggestion Box
CreateHere is a research and planning project focused on the engagement of young, creative and innovative artists and entrepreneurs in a "collective rethink" of Chattanooga. Collecting input from artists, community leaders, business owners, corporate executives and not-for-profit agencies, the project is gathering information with a view toward creating a plan to enable artist- and creative enterprise-led cultural and economic development.
"The group that we are serving is tech savvy and tuned in to the value of good design," said CreateHere program strategist Helen Johnson. "We knew that the right strategy and implementation of a website could help us tap the collective unconscious. But design and development both had to serve our mission, which is to allow people to make their voices heard."
So the group asked local integrated design firm Coptix, Inc. to help them develop a web site that is both information hub and "virtual suggestion box." Building upon brand standards created by Paul Rustand of Widgets and Stone, Coptix built a site that shares and gathers information in ways that are as inclusive and easy to use as possible.
The site features a statement of CreateHere's commitments to the city's economic, environmental and cultural benefit as well as a blog to which visitors may contribute and a simple survey inviting participants to shift their expectations about Chattanooga and dream about what is possible.
"We are thrilled to bring greater exposure to this fantastic project," said Josiah Q. Roe, newly appointed President of Coptix, Inc. "The more that people talk about CreateHere and about what is possible for our great city of Chattanooga, the better it is for all of us. If you haven't taken the survey yet, go to createhere.org and share your ideas."

CreateHere is a collective rethink project by Chattanoogans, for Chattanooga. Focused on enabling innovative artists and entrepreneurs to grow in the city, CreateHere works with a vision of benefitting the city as a whole through economic and cultural development.

USGBC Works for Greener Chattanooga with Coptix-Built Website

The US Green Building Council (USGBC), a not-for-profit group made up of more than 10,500 member organizations and 75 regional chapters, is America's leading voice in introducing and promoting sustainable best practices for the building industry.
The core purpose of the USGBC is to change the way that buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves quality of life. The organization is most widely known for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, which sets measurable standards for high performance green buildings. However, the USGBC also functions as a networking and enabling organization, gathering architects, designers, engineers, consultants, contractors and others around issues of sustainable design and construction.
As a networking organization, the USGBC knows the importance of bringing people together, so the group's new Chattanooga chapter enlisted Coptix, Inc. to create an internet presence that would further this goal. Part blog, part event calendar, and part information resource, the site features upcoming events and links to local green building initiatives, eco-minded professional services firms and relevant city agencies.
"Green is all over the news these days, so it is hard to deny how important it is to reduce the negative impact we have on the environment," said Heather Adcox of ecoDesign sustainable design consultants and the USGBC. "There are steps that we can take on a local level that will cause effect on a global level. The East Tennessee Chapter of the USGBC educates and advocates high performance design and construction specific to our very own community. Design professionals, contractors, building owners, developer and home owners all have things we can do to improve our community, our environment and our future."
"At Coptix, we believe that promoting a sustainable future for our city involves more than creating jobs and economic development - it must include environmental and social factors," said Coptix Executive Vice President Josiah Roe. "To this end, we believe that supporting green initiatives in town should mean more than sponsoring great events like Green Drinks. We were pleased to help promote the local USGBC chapter events and member organizations, because their work benefits all Chattanoogans."

McCallie Rising Senior Joins Coptix

"Noah is insanely talented," said Coptix Executive Vice President, Josiah Roe. "Based on his work and confidence, we thought he was a in college. When we found out that he was a rising senior in high school, we offered him our summer internship on the spot."
As an integrated design firm, Coptix is responsible for designing and developing strategies that leverage the internet as a tool to serve the business goals of its clients. The internship will offer Burney valuable marketplace experience alongside experts in the field, without requiring him to spend the summer months in Atlanta, Nashville or other larger city.
"I am planning to apply to design schools like Pratt Institute, RISD and the University of Illinois at Chicago," said Burney. "An internship really helps my chances of getting into an outstanding program, if it is a quality internship with a talented company. When I looked at the companies in town, Coptix's design portfolio was easily the strongest."
To date, Burney has worked on social networking pages for the company, helped with ground-level production on client sites, and has contributed to the development of a new suite of website interface tools Coptix will be releasing later in the year. Roe has been so pleased with Burney's work that they are arranging for him to continue the internship part-time during the school year.
"A fundamental shift in the way we think about web design is occurring," said Roe. "Dynamic & forward thinking students like Noah are bringing future possibilities for the internet closer and closer. Our goal is no longer 'the internet on your desktop' but instead 'the internet is your desktop."

Collier Construction Enlists Coptix to Build Online Differentiation
Collier Construction is on a mission to let Chattanooga know what differentiates its services from those of other residential and commercial builders in the city. So Collier enlisted Chattanooga's leading integrated design firm, Coptix, Inc. to spread the good news.
Collier Construction's main point of differentiation is its commitment to value, longevity, and green building. The average life expectancy of a house is fifty years, meaning that within that time period most of the major components will be replaced. Collier offers a product that outlives the average in all categories, using advanced construction techniques that bring a high return on investment to owners. Collier is also Chattanooga's leading builder of sustainable homes and commercial projects, using environmentally sensitive materials and techniques to reduce impact on the environment.
"When we wanted to update our website, Coptix was an easy choice for us," said Project Estimator Jason Lentz. "We took one look at the websites they have produced, and knew it was the right fit. We were looking for more than a site with portfolio pictures and contact information, wanting a place on the net that would show a future customer what we do, how we do it, and why."
Working with the brand identity developed by local graphic designer and UTC art professor Matt Greenwell, Coptix designed and built collierbuild.com. The site clearly and simply communicates Collier's mission, abilities and experience, while employing visual cues to subtly communicate uniqueness. Shifting the navigation and logo away from where they are conventionally located, high contrast blocks of color and an updatable news section all differentiate Collier from competitors, in small but effective ways.
"Coptix was extremely helpful and knowledgeable through the process of building the site, and - even better - they built the site so I can easily make quick changes to text, layout, and pictures," said Lentz. "There is no need to contact them every time I want to make edits, because they supplied and support the applications I need to do it myself, on my own schedule."
Equally as important, Coptix is using its web expertise to spread the word about Collier's brand values. Local bloggers, social bookmarking sites, e-mail broadcasts, directory submissions and a public relations campaign have been marshaled to drive thousands of visitors to collierbuild.com in coming weeks.
"The Collier Construction site is a project that is close to our passions," said Coptix Executive Vice President Josiah Roe. "We care a great deal about the burgeoning green design movement in Chattanooga: we are sponsors of Green Drinks and, as members of AIGA, support its growing sustainability initiatives as well. So, we were drawn to Collier's commitment to building sustainable structures that are not only good for customers, but for our community and the planet."

Hardee's Commissions Coptix & Big Boom Town to Launch Integrated Regional Advertising
Beginning in May of 2007, a regional marketing campaign will launch for American restaurant chain Hardee's under the theme, "My Town, My Hardee's." Focusing on Hardees' popularity in small towns in the region, the campaign integrates web, print and viral marketing developed collaboratively by Big Boom Town Advertising and Chattanooga integrated design firm Coptix Inc..
"Hardee's is part of the townscapes and local communities of the South," said Coptix Executive Vice President Josiah Roe. "From their biscuit breakfast sandwiches to the events they sponsor, Hardee's deserves local advertising that reflects not only the Southern roots of its founding, but the people who know and love its food."
For the design and development of the campaign, Coptix worked closely with Big Boom Town - which handles advertising for Hardee's in the Tennessee Valley - and built upon demographic research undertaken by Cleveland, Tennessee based J&S Restaurants Inc., a franchisee of Hardee's Food Systems, Inc.. The firms collaboratively named and developed the multi-faceted campaign, which includes brand positioning, print ads, and radio placement.
Big Boom Town and Coptix also designed and built a web site and online advertising campaign that includes videos that have been featured on local radio station & news web sites, customer surveys, photo galleries of Hardee's-sponsored events, and online games that customers can play daily to win biscuits and burgers. The web component was developed to be search engine friendly and oriented toward maximum exposure for the restaurants.
"We chose to work with Coptix because from the very first meeting I knew I was talking to people who not only understood the Hardee’s brand, but were loyal customers as well,” said Dale Forrester, president of Big Boom Town. “They immediately understood the direction we were wanting to take to further communicate with our customer base. We are truly excited about growing the campaign to reflect our pride and involvement in the Tennessee Valley."

Local businesses and attractions are promoted in a dedicated section of the site.
At the same time community news a directory of officials and employees, and the agendas and minutes of city council meetings keep citizens connected to their leadership. Coptix Designs and Builds Relaunch of Times Free Press Web Site
The Chattanooga Times Free Press, Chattanooga's daily newspaper, is now breaking news online even better than before, in ways that reach any reader within reach of an internet connection. The newspaper's relaunched web site, www.timesfreepress.com, is the result of a collaborative design and development effort with the city's leading web development and marketing company, Coptix, Inc.
Through an intensive research process including surveying the entire editorial staff, researching best practices of regional and national newspapers, and thoroughly evaluating user experience and expectations for content, Coptix developed a strategy for the web site to complement and strengthen the print newspaper.
Recommendations ranged from a new web address -- changed from "tfponline.com" to "timesfreepress.com" in order to more closely associate the site with the brand -- to a design and technology framework that allows future expansion into a wide variety of content paths. After the consulting phase, Coptix built a site that fulfilled the editors' vision for the site, integrating abilities for podcasting, audio news shorts, video, photo galleries, slide show and more. The result is a site that offers a more robust experience of the news, yet in ways that are friendlier to both experienced and inexperienced web users.
"When we decided to update our Internet site, the Times Free Press knew that the talent was local," said Tom Griscom, Editor and Publisher. "Creativity, implementing new features into a new web presence, was a key component that Coptix brought to the project. Our viewers see their work."
"Not only is it a pleasure to work with a client of the Times Free Press' stature, this project has also been gratifying because it involved pulling many factors into a single, unified site," said Coptix Executive Vice President Josiah Q. Roe. "Combining the many varied opinions of the editors with the many tools and functions that should be at the disposal of the staff -- and all in a way that is user friendly and beautiful -- this was a challenge that we embraced and enjoyed. It is a delight to see the site live and serving the newspaper well!"

For more than fifty years, the Arts & Education Council of Chattanooga (AEC) has provided opportunities for members of the Chattanooga community to participate in arts programs. Coptix Brings a Taste of St. John’s Restaurant to the Web
St. John’s Restaurant is pleased to announce the grand opening of its web site, designed and built by Chattanooga’s leading web development company, Coptix, Inc.
In a time when buzz and excitement characterize Chattanooga’s growing dining scene, Chef Daniel Lindley’s formal St. John’s and sister restaurant, the urban bistro St John’s Meeting Place, are the city’s shining stars. His innovative menus featuring top quality, locally sourced seasonal ingredients―complemented by an international wine program and served in a beautifully renovated former hotel―create a dining experience that is unique in the city and beyond. Hallmarked by top flavor, service and attention to detail, Lindley’s dishes have been celebrated by the New York Times as “superb” and prompted Southern Living to call him “a genius in the kitchen.”
The design and development team at Coptix has created an online experience that corresponds to visiting the restaurant. Using customized search engine optimization, Coptix ensures that diners are able easily to find the restaurant’s site online. Upon arrival at www.stjohnsrestaurant.com, web users find easy navigation, clean stylish design and impressive food photography. Chef Lindley’s kitchen background, the history of the space and―most importantly―the menus are simple to locate and enjoyable to browse.
“Because a restaurant’s online presence is less to bring traffic to the web site than to bring traffic the restaurant itself, we went to great lengths to capture the spirit of Chef Lindley’s culinary creations, the customer service, and the beautiful location,” said Coptix Executive Vice-President Josiah Roe. “The food photography is stunning, and the user experience is designed to take web surfers by the hand and lead them to the restaurant’s front door.”
“My goal for our website was that it give a comprehensive view of what happens at both St. John’s Restaurant and at St. John’s Meeting Place,” said Lindley. “Most importantly, that it reflect the discipline, quality and beauty that occur here on a daily basis. After extensive concept and design work, Coptix was able to achieve this goal with great success.”
About St John's Restaurant
Since the fall of 2000, St. John’s Restaurant has purveyed the nation’s finest food and wine with passion, attention to detail, comfort and top-notch service. Housed in Chattanooga’s historic St. John’s Hotel building, the restaurant showcases Chef Daniel Lindley’s expertise with the best of each season and the finest ingredients from around the world and around the region all served in a lush, elegant setting. In 2004, St. John’s Meeting Place joined the more formal St. John’s Restaurant offering the same quality food and service in a more casual atmosphere. Meeting Place features Lindley’s uncommon approach to traditional bistro fare – from a simple charcuterie and cheese plate to the best Kobe Beef burger in a hip, lounge setting.

Coptix Brings Chattem’s Ultraswim to the Web
For the launch of a website promoting UltraSwim, its patented formula shampoo, Chattem, Inc. partnered with Coptix, Inc. to create an online user experience as simple and fun as an afternoon swim.
UltraSwim is a product created for the 100 million people who enjoy America's number one sport—swimming. While the fitness and fun benefits of swimming are obvious, one common down side is hair that becomes dry and brittle as a result of exposure to chlorine, so common that "swimmer's hair" is a familiar sight around the pool. UltraSwim not only removes twice as much chlorine from hair as other swimmer shampoos, it also removes chlorine odor and oxidized metals, and contains moisturizers and vitamins to nourish hair. Meaning that swimmers can enjoy themselves without worrying about their hair.
Coptix was commissioned to design and develop a web site that delivers a simple educational message about the benefits of UltraSwim, presented in an engaging manner. www.ultraswim.com delivers the fluid, graceful look of a site developed with the best programming platforms for graphical elements, without requiring users to sit and needlessly wait or download additional programs simply to access information about the product. Instead, with a simple user experience and easy navigation, the site highlights the benefits of the product without taxing customers' patience. Thanks to Coptix's knowledge of web marketing, the site was also developed in ways that maximize its friendliness to search engines, with the result that any user with an internet connection can easily learn about UltraSwim.
“We were excited to find a talented group of web designers who were basically in our own backyard in St. Elmo," said Andrea Crouch, Chattem Vice President, Brand Management. "We found the Coptix design work to be interesting and insightful and a good fit for what we were trying to accomplish with UltraSwim.”
“At Coptix, we wanted to create a site that delivers Ultraswim’s benefits in a clear, consistent way, while capturing the playful and refreshing associations that we all have when we think of a dip in the pool,” said Coptix Vice President Josiah Roe. “Our purpose is to create technology that serves the business objectives of our clients. For UltraSwim, we wanted to build Chattem a website that educates the public, helps create further interest in the product and captures the spirit of a strong brand. Building a great site for such a great product was a real pleasure.”

Coptix and Widgets & Stone bring Clumpies Ice Creamy Goodness to the Web
Coptix, Inc., Chattanooga's leading graphic design and web marketing company, announces the launch of Clumpies.com. In close partnership with Widgets & Stone, the full service agency which has developed and managed the Clumpies brand over the course of seven years. Coptix built a web site that captures the brand's strength and opens up new opportunities online.
Voted best in Chattanooga two years in a row, Clumpies creates ice creams and sorbets known throughout the Southeast for their uniqueness and flavor. In 2006, the company has embarked on a strategic growth phase including moving ice cream production from its flagship store in North Chattanooga to a space on Chattanooga’s Southside, and the opening of new stores in Hixson, Tennessee and Mountain Brook, Alabama.
At the same time, owner Marshall Brock wanted to connect with Clumpies' loyal and growing fan base online.
"We go to great lengths to create an experience and ethos around Clumpies that is as rich and gratifying as our ice creams," said Brock. "Fun and friendship, taking a few minutes out of a busy life for simple pleasures that are worth enjoying. When we decided to create a web presence, we wanted it to bring the same values to the cluttered, crazy world of the internet."
Working closely with Paul Rustand, Design Director at Widgets & Stone, Coptix's designers and developers built a site that connects with customers in a personal and personable way, from the tongue in cheek introduction to Clumpies ice creams to the fast, simple shopping cart for buying branded merchandise from t-shirts to truckers' caps, from ice cream gadgets to flying discs.
Using a blend of Flash and non-Flash programming developed in-house, Coptix gave the user experience a look and feel that is smooth and clean, yet is faster than traditional Flash sites as well as being optimized so that search engines looking for ice cream in Chattanooga will be drawn to Clumpies.
"Coptix was delighted to be given the opportunity to bring the unique quality of the Clumpies brand onto the internet," said Josiah Roe, Coptix Vice President. "At Coptix we believe that good design and technology are both respectful of the consumer and true to the soul of your business. The key to success is a compelling marriage of those objectives, and it was wonderful working towards that goal with Clumpies Ice Cream in the development of their website."

Coptix Promotes Chattanooga Film Festival with BackRowFilms.com
Chattanooga design and technology company Coptix, Inc has designed and launched a new website to publicize this summer's Back Row Film Series.
A joint program of the Chattanooga Arts and Education Council, Hunter Museum and UTC, the film series kicked off last month at Girls' Preparatory School with a competition among shorts created by area directors and the Chattanooga premiere of "Suburban Tumbleweed" by Nashville filmmaker Seth Worley. Once a month throughout the summer events will be held at the Hunter, featuring films including a mockumentary produced by Spike Lee, a screening of 1992 favorite "Like Water for Chocolate" with locally catered food and chocolates, and a film about the making of Chattanooga's public art that commemorates the Trail of Tears. At each event the film experience is enhanced by live performances of original scores, presentations by film creators and workshops on screenwriting, filmmaking and editing. The series concludes in September with a panel discussion about an icon of Appalachian film, "Deliverance".
Since the series is sponsored by local community organizations and businesses and supports local talent, organizers came to Chattanooga's leading design and technology company, Coptix, Inc, to create its website. Coptix designed and developed a website that appeals to the filmmakers as well as fans, promoting the series online, and also created print posters and brochures at the request of the Arts & Education Council.
"The Back Row Film Series is a new initiative, so we knew that marketing and branding would be the key to our success,” said Laurel Eldridge of the Arts & Education Council. “We chose to work with Coptix because they have demonstrated the creative and technical expertise for effectively delivering our message to target audiences. Each designer assigned to our project--from print to web--was not only easy to work with, but committed to the excellence of their work."
"The Back Row Film Series can really further Chattanooga's arts community, and the wider reputation of what Chattanooga offers, by bringing unique films and learning opportunities that locals might not have been able to experience otherwise" said Coptix Vice President Josiah Roe. "The internet is a great support resource for this, not only by keeping the public informed about the series' events but by creating a third level of interactivity to audience experience and strengthening what is a very young brand."

Coptix Creates Chalmers Chocolate Experience Online
Chalmers Chocolate and Coptix, Inc. have launched a web site offering the luxurious, top quality chocolate products for sale online.
By prioritizing close attention to every detail of customer experience, Chalmers Chocolate founder Megan Cohn has grown the company from a home-recipe startup to a favorite in kitchens across America in only two years. The decadent, all natural flavors and thick spreadable texture of their Dark Chocolate and Mint Chocolate ganaches delight the senses. The product packaging, designed by Chattanooga design firm Widgets & Stone, hints at boutique gift-wrapping. So the brand's online experience needed to place the same importance on providing an uncomplicated, satisfying experience for customers.
Using its strengths as Chattanooga's leading web marketing company, Coptix designed and built an updated web site that emphasizes Chalmers' quality and heightens customer enjoyment, from the look and feel of each page to its easy-to-use online store. Coptix also optimized the site for web searches, so that from the day of its launch it would be readily found by search engines such as Google and Yahoo.
"It was great to work with Coptix to take our website to the next level and introduce our beautiful selections to hungry web surfers," said Cohn. "The improvements to our site and the addition of our online store are just one more step to help us meet the needs of our discerning customers. We're thrilled to bring our great taste and the finest natural ingredients to the world."
"Chalmers products are all about creating a world away from the everyday world, through the pure joy of chocolate," said Coptix Vice President Josiah Roe. "At Coptix, we believe that technology and design serve business, rather than the other way around. So we create tools that bring customers, drive sales and build brand strength. We are delighted to be able to bring these tools to the table for
Chalmers, to help further its already impressive growth and energy."

The SERVE CHATTANOOGA initiative unites churches, community, civic and business leaders to improve public schools by designing and implementing specific projects that enable meaningful community service.
